Sample Essay #3

"Dentistry, as my career choice, is a goal that has developed, solidified, and continues to be reinforced by experiences in and around the field of dentistry.  I grew up in my father’s dental chair and from a very young age have been exposed to the many different aspects of the profession.  I’ve also experienced a different point of view of dentistry as a dental assistant, being on the receiving end of the doctor/employee relationship.  Through these opportunities directly involved with the dental profession, and other non-related experiences, becoming a dental practitioner has become a well-educated, well thought-out, and realistic goal.

My father graduated from the [University] School of Dentistry in 19XX.  I lived with my mother and sister in [a state], and my father moved to [a state] to start a practice.  Most of the summertime I spent in [a state] with my dad, returning to [a state] in the fall for school.  Spending time in [a state] afforded me the opportunity to experience a different culture, and early on, gain a respect for peoples of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.  Summers also meant spending a lot of time around the dental office.  I was able to see first hand what it meant to own your own business, the risks taken, and the responsibility accepted.  I’ve come to understand that not only does a dentist need to be competent in the use of his hands, but he also is an employer, a businessman, a plumber, a lawyer, and a secretary, among other things.

After one semester at the [University], I served as a missionary for my church in [a city, and state].  For two years I worked closely with many people of differing cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.  I feel I gained more understanding and compassion for people in general, as well as increased insight into my personal life and the direction I needed to take it.

In April of 19XX, I enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at [a local] Applied Technology Center.  The training included a 300-hour, unpaid assisting internship in a local dental office, which I completed in the office of Dr. [Soandso].  It also included certification for [a state] Dental Radiology and American Red Cross CPR.  As an assistant, I was able to participate, first-hand, in the various procedures of a general practice. Dr. [Soandso] was helpful in explaining different aspects and techniques of the procedures, and was mindful of letting me do all I was legally able to do.  This kind of exposure has helped to solidify my decision and commitment to dentistry.

I am dedicated to my goal to become a dentist, and I am satisfied with my academic achievement and the knowledge and experience I have gained up until now.  I understand the hard work, commitment, and resources necessary to be a competent and successful contributor to the field of dentistry and I fully intend to draw upon what I’ve learned to help me realize the personal and professional goals that I’ve set."
